This design strategy of this three level apartment in a converted industrial building establishes a unique series of spatial connections, Designed for a couple with two young children, the new spatial systems reinforce both areas of retreat and interaction between the levels and the occupants.
The first floor is oriented towards a two-story high window wall with views to the East River and Williamsburg. A kitchen designed with IKEA elements defines the back wall of the space, and two hanging lights – over the kitchen island and the dining area – define points of rest.
An open riser steel stair provides access to the mezzanine, where two bedrooms with large full height sliding doors orient themselves to the view and the living space below. The expanded metal railing allows northern light into both bedrooms, which are defined on two sides by IKEA storage walls. The children’s room at the end of the mezzanine has an open ceiling, allowing light from the penthouse to reach the floors below.
A wood stair carved into the rear of the mezzanine level accesses a well-lit penthouse flex room that functions as a retreat from the spaces below, a guest bedroom, or a study/office. A play net hangs over the opening to the children’s bedroom below, with a sliding floor panel that can separate the two rooms and extend the useable space of the penthouse.
