The Neighborhood Design Center is a space supporting a variety of community-based programs within the larger goals of the HCCI – NYIT Building Resilient Communities project. The space serves as a focal point on Frederick Douglass Boulevard for community members and passers-by.
The project includes a full demolition of the existing walls in the space and opening the back wall of the space to the building courtyard, allowing for a complete visual connection between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and the courtyard.
The addition of two dynamic elements to the space will define the activities between the sidewalk and the courtyard and create a space that is ever-changing in its expression to the community.
The pixelated south wall contains all the programmatic elements within a stepped zone that transforms to provide various necessary functional elements: seating, storage, furnishings while also providing exhibition areas and informal meeting places. It is made out of modular 14” cubic elements.
The north wall is an exhibition wall that has panels that can be folded in and out to expand and contract the exhibition surface as needed.
